MAP & Radio Ergo held training on Somali language for Journalists in Garowe

Press Relese, Garowe, 02 April 2015:- Media Association of Puntland (MAP) and Radio Ergo, humanitarian radio station based in Nairobi co-organised training on the Somali language for various journalists and media professionals in Puntland state capital, Garowe on Thursday.

The training, which is the first of its kind in Puntland was aimed at enhancing and equipping Somali journalists with essential writing and speaking skills of Somali language for their audiences.

Speaking at the opening of the workshop, Puntland Information minister Abdiweli Indhaguran who officially opened the training thanked the organizers of the workshop and urged for more trainings for its kind in the future.

“I’m impressed to attend and open such a colorful workshop, this is one of the most needed workshops in the field of journalism in Somalia because it gives journalists the chance to improve their standards of Somali language in their day to day activity, I urge more trainings of its kind in the future”, notes Indhaguran

“This one-day workshop organized by Radio Ergo with the support of various international organizations including International Media Support (IMS), Danish Refugee Council (DRC), The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation and Common Humanitarian Fund-Somalia, which is intended to improve the quality of the Somali language used in the media sector”, says Ms Fauzia Omar, program coordinator and Radio Ergo journalist.

Abdirizak Iro, a trainer thanked Media Association of Puntland for playing a key role in converging this worship.

“I was surprised to find many mostly used words in my daily activity wrong, I think this is one of the most beneficial trainings I ever attended, I had the opportunity to know many new things though one-day isn’t enough.” stated Maimun Abdirizak, London-based Somali Channel TV reporter

Making the closing remarks of the training, MAP chairman Faisal Barre urged participants to serve the knowledge you gained from the training to the community

This training which has attracted more than 40 journalists in Garowe comes at a time when concerns had been raised regarding the standard of the Somali language in Somalia’s media industry.
