Journalist’s Unlawful Arrest Tests Puntland’s Commitment to Press Freedom

Garowe, Puntland July 03: The Media Association of Puntland (MAP) strongly condemns the unlawful arrest and detention of journalist Suweys Gacayte, who was taken into custody by local authorities in Garowe on 2 July 2026 and is currently being held at Garowe Central Prison.

Following immediate engagement with the relevant authorities, MAP has established that Ms. Gacayte’s arrest was not carried out in accordance with the legal procedures required under the Puntland Constitution and the Puntland Media Law. Respect for due process and the rule of law is fundamental and must be upheld in all circumstances.

This incident follows the arrest of journalist Mohamed Abdinaasir in Qardho in mid-June, who was released following MAP’s intervention. The recurrence of such incidents within a short period raises serious concerns about an emerging pattern of unlawful actions against journalists and highlights the need to protect media freedom and the independence of the press.

“The unlawful arrest of a journalist is not only a violation of an individual’s rights but also a setback for the rule of law and press freedom. Journalists must be able to carry out their professional duties without fear of arbitrary arrest or intimidation. We call for the immediate and unconditional release of Suweys Gacayte and urge the authorities to ensure that any action involving journalists is conducted strictly in accordance with the Puntland Constitution and the Puntland Media Law.”— Mohamed Dahir Warsame, Chair, Media Association of Puntland (MAP).

MAP calls for the immediate and unconditional release of Suweys Gacayte. Should there be any allegation against her, it must be addressed through the competent legal process, in full compliance with the Puntland Constitution, the Puntland Media Law, and the guarantees of due process and fair trial afforded to every citizen.

The Association further urges all public institutions to uphold the Constitution, respect media laws, and protect the rights and freedoms guaranteed under the law. A free and independent press is indispensable to accountability, transparency, and informed public participation. Journalists must be able to perform their work without unlawful interference, intimidation, or arbitrary detention. MAP remains committed to defending press freedom, promoting the safety of journalists, and engaging constructively with the relevant authorities to ensure that the rights guaranteed by law are respected at all times.
