Building Safer Digital Journalism: MAP Wraps Up Cyber and Digital Safety Training in Garowe

Garowe, Puntland – The Media Association of Puntland (MAP) has successfully concluded a comprehensive two-day Cyber and Digital Safety Training held in Garowe, under the Danwadaag Programme, with support from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, and implemented in collaboration with Free Press Unlimited.
The training brought together journalists, editors, and media practitioners from across Puntland in response to the growing need for stronger digital resilience in an era defined by rapid technological change, rising cyber threats, and increasing online risks facing media professionals.
Over the two days, participants engaged in practical, scenario-based learning designed to strengthen real-world digital safety practices. Key areas included digital risk identification and mitigation, secure communication tools and practices, social media account protection, data security and privacy management, and effective responses to online harassment and intimidation.
The sessions also placed strong emphasis on ethical journalism in digital spaces, including verification of online information, combating misinformation, and maintaining credibility in fast-moving information environments. Participants worked through hands-on exercises to assess their own digital vulnerabilities and develop practical safety strategies applicable to their daily reporting work.
Beyond technical skills, the training fostered peer exchange and collective learning, reinforcing the importance of solidarity among journalists in addressing shared digital threats. Participants highlighted the relevance of the training to their daily work, particularly in navigating sensitive reporting environments and protecting both personal and source security.
Speaking at the closing session, Naima Muse Elmi emphasized that digital safety is no longer a secondary skill but a core requirement for modern journalism. She urged participants to ensure that the knowledge gained does not remain theoretical, but is actively integrated into their daily reporting routines. She further stressed that protecting digital identities, securing communication channels, and practicing safe reporting habits are essential not only for journalists’ safety, but also for preserving public trust in the media.
In conclusion, this training marks a significant step in strengthening the resilience, safety, and professionalism of journalists in Puntland’s rapidly evolving digital landscape. MAP remains committed to advancing initiatives that equip media practitioners with the skills needed to operate securely, report ethically, and withstand emerging online threats. By investing in digital safety and responsible journalism, we are not only protecting journalists but also reinforcing the credibility and trustworthiness of the media as a cornerstone of informed public discourse.
