Garowe, Puntland: The Media Association of Puntland (MAP), in collaboration with Save the Children, successfully concluded a two-day capacity-building training for 20 local journalists held in Garowe from 7–8 December 2025. The initiative is part of ongoing efforts to support responsible media reporting and enhance advocacy aimed at ending Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and harmful traditional practices affecting girls and women in Puntland.
During the two-day training, journalists participated in a series of structured learning sessions designed to broaden their understanding and strengthen their reporting skills on sensitive subjects. The programme began with expert-led briefings on the medical, psychological, and social impacts of FGM and other harmful practices. These sessions provided participants with accurate and evidence-based information to ensure their reporting reflects the realities faced by girls and women in affected communities.
The training also covered the legal and policy frameworks that safeguard girls’ and women’s rights. Journalists were introduced to national laws, community-level protection mechanisms, and international conventions, enabling them to incorporate legal perspectives into their stories and highlight accountability gaps where necessary.
A major focus of the workshop was ethical and sensitive reporting. Facilitators guided participants through best practices for interviewing survivors, protecting vulnerable sources, and applying safeguarding principles when producing stories that involve minors or individuals at risk. This included discussions on survivor-centred storytelling, maintaining confidentiality, and avoiding content that may retraumatize victims or sensationalize their experiences.
In addition, the training explored the role of the media in advocacy and social behaviour change. Journalists examined how their reporting can shape public attitudes, support community dialogue, and promote positive social norms that contribute to ending harmful practices. Trainers emphasised the importance of constructive messaging and the media’s responsibility in amplifying voices that champion girls’ and women’s rights.
Practical exercises were integrated throughout the training to help journalists apply their newly gained skills. Participants developed sample story ideas, designed awareness messages, and practiced producing short radio, TV, and digital content focused on advocacy. They also received guidance on using social media safely and effectively, combating misinformation, and engaging online audiences when reporting on sensitive issues.
Through these activities, the training substantially strengthened the participants’ ability to produce responsible, informed, and impactful reporting that supports ongoing efforts to eliminate harmful practices and promote the rights and wellbeing of girls and women across Puntland.
MAP extends its appreciation to Save the Children for its continued partnership and commitment to advancing gender equality and child protection through enhanced media engagement. MAP remains dedicated to equipping media professionals with the tools and knowledge needed to drive awareness, accountability, and meaningful social change in the region.
