Garowe, Puntland – 09 May 2025; The Media Association of Puntland (MAP), in collaboration with the United Nations Transition Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS), has successfully concluded a two-day capacity-building workshop held from 7–8 May 2025 in Garowe. The training aimed to enhance journalists’ understanding and skills in ethically and accurately reporting on issues related to refugees, internally displaced persons (IDPs), and host communities in Puntland.
The workshop brought together 20 journalists from various media outlets across the region. Participants engaged in expert-led sessions on international protection principles, the legal and humanitarian contexts of displacement, and the responsibilities of media professionals in covering such sensitive issues. The sessions emphasized the importance of responsible journalism that protects the dignity of displaced persons and fosters public awareness through truthful and empathetic storytelling.
In her opening remarks, MAP Secretary General Naima Musse stated, “This workshop is about more than just reporting — it is about deepening our responsibility to tell the stories of displaced people with care, accuracy, and integrity. As journalists, we have a powerful role in shaping public perception and policy. Ethical reporting can influence how displaced communities are treated and whether they are seen with humanity or suspicion. That is why this conversation is essential and timely for Puntland’s media.”
Over the two days, journalists participated in interactive discussions, practical exercises, and case study reviews that helped them reflect on their current practices and explore ways to improve ethical standards in reporting on humanitarian issues. Facilitators stressed the need for conflict-sensitive reporting and approaches that prioritize human rights, accuracy, and impartiality.
The workshop is part of an ongoing collaboration between MAP and UNTMIS aimed at building a professional and accountable media sector in Puntland that contributes to peacebuilding, transparency, and informed public discourse. The event concluded with a strong call for continued investment in the capacity and safety of journalists working on the frontlines of humanitarian coverage.
MAP extends its appreciation to all participants, facilitators, and partners for their valuable contributions and looks forward to further collaborative efforts to strengthen ethical journalism across Puntland.
