First Phase of Joint Media Field Access Project by MAP & PDRC Successfully Conducted in Hafun and Buran districts

Garowe, Somalia: – 27 February 2015. Media Association of Puntland (MAP) and Puntland Development Research Centre (PDRC) are pleased to announce the successful conclusion of the first phase of a long term media field access initiative from 15-22 February 2015.

Journalists from Puntland TV, Somali Broadcast Corporation (SBC Radio) and Universal TV stations were given the chance to cover social programs on Health, Education and Humanitarian situation from Hafun and Buran districts of Bari and Haylan regions respectively.

MAP Chairman Faisal Khalif highlighted the importance of such program toward the Somali journalists in Puntland regions, and on the other hand thanked the centre (PDRC) and organization supporting this program.

“I’m quite sure that journalists who traveled to these districts have a lot of experience by now to explore and share with their audiences, I would also like to take this opportunely to thank PDRC and Interpeace for their effective role on enhancing media sector”. States Khalif

Abdinasir Yussuf, a PDRC Researcher noted that the center is proud to be part of this program for Puntland journalists, affirming that they will expand such programs in the future.

“I’m happy to announce the just-concluded first phase of this media initiative was absolutely one of the most advantageous and productive programs facilitated by the centre (PDRC) so far, it has been quite positive and we will continue to carry out such programs to Puntland journalists”, adds Yussuf

“These three young and talented journalists had the opportunity to see and make stories from some historical sites as well as the ruins of Italian colony including the footsteps of the II World War between (Italy and Britain), oil exploration sites and Huriya salt factory”, notes Yussuf

Mohamed Bashe, a Universal TV journalist who was among the journalists in the field expressed his delight to visit various historical sites in Hafun, a coastal town in Bari region, saying this was a lifetime experience.

The program supported by Interpeace, is the first of its kind launched in Puntland which is set to run for the next couple of months as all journalists operating Puntland media houses are expected to directly benefit from it.

On 25-31 December 2014 Media Association of Puntland and Puntland Development and Research Centre co-organized seven-day long training on media field access and understanding embedment processes in Puntland state capital, Garowe.
